Founded in 1689, Nagano Meijo has been brewing high-quality sake in the same location for over 300 years. The area, called Obasute, is famous for a beautiful moon viewing spot even since Manyo era (1250 - 1350) beloved by Matsuo Bashō, the most famous poet in Edo period. Obasute is also well known for its clean spring water and tanada (rice terraces). The brewery makes only junmai style sake using the locally produced rice. The sake bottle's label, designed by a local artist, features the rice terrace image.
